Review | Nosh & Quaff, Birmingham

Even though Nandos is where you’ll find me 80% of the time, I do also love trying out new restaurants. Recently, I was invited to dine at Nosh & Quaff in Birmingham. Before booking my table, I had a little nosy at their menu and was pleased to see lobster, ribs and gourmet burgers on there.

As Nosh & Quaff stated on their website that their lobster is the "undoubted rock star of the show", I took my dad with me as he enjoys lobster more than I do. Situated on Colmore Row (just on the corner of Victoria Square), the restaurant had a really cool and relaxed vibe - the interior reminded me of a New York style loft/apartment.

For starters, we ordered the Sticky BBQ Wings and the Cajun Trinity Fritters. The wings were amazing! The meat on it was really soft and the BBQ sauce had the right amount of sweetness and smokiness. The Cajun Trinity Fritters were really good too! The cajun balls had a blend of sweetcorn, peppers and spring onion and the sriracha mayo gave the dish a little kick to it, which we loved.

For mains, my dad went for the Fresh Whole Lobster (obvs). It came with fries, side salad and garlic lemon butter sauce. At first, I was a bit skeptical on whether it was going to fill him up or not because I know he’s had bigger lobsters before. Boy, was I wrong… My dad left most of his fries in the end because of how filling it was. Judging by how pro he was with the lobster cracker and pick, I do class him as a seafood connoisseur. His verdict on the lobster was that it was really meaty and juicy - just how a well-cooked lobster should be. He also said to the garlic lemon butter sauce complemented the lobster really well.

On the other hand, I went for the Beef Ribs. They were literally the meatiest ribs I’ve ever had! The thickness of the meat around each bone was unreal – I struggled to eat it all! It was really juicy and tender, and the flavour was just perfect. The hickory smoke and molasses glaze had the right combination of sweet and smoky to it - just how ribs should be! Accompanied with crispy fries and crunchy slaw, the sides were great when I needed a break from the meat.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough room for dessert as we overindulged on the starters and mains (very rare of us indeed). I'm sure we would've loved their desserts but in all honesty, we didn't need the full three course to know that Nosh & Quaff is a great restaurant to dine at if you want something both hearty and delicious. If I had to pick out a fault, I would say that they need to make sure that they stock up on their much-boasted lobsters. We visited the restaurant on a quiet Tuesday evening at 7pm and we were told that they only had one lobster left (which my dad obviously took). However, a few diners especially a large group of diners celebrating a birthday were disappointed when they were told that they've already sold out their lobsters. Other than that, there wasn't anything else that I could fault! Food was brilliant, service was great and the atmosphere of the whole place was so chilling! It's the perfect place to dine whether that be with friends, family or even colleagues after work (if you haven't had enough of them already).
