HAPPY NEW YEAR GUYSSSS! (Bit late but oh well). I hope you all had a great Christmas and had a great start to 2017! I seriously did, I want it to happen all over again. Anyways, to shift my focus away from needing to shift those holiday pounds, I'm gonna share with you my top 8 attractions in Berlin that you need to visit.

Berlin was never a place that I was itching to visit. I don't know why but it just wasn't ever on my list. So when me and Sat were deciding on where to celebrate our 4th anniversary, Berlin came into the picture due to their famous Christmas markets and Sat's childhood (he spent a lot of time there when he was younger). Now that I've been, I can honestly say that Berlin is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited.

1. Brandenburg Gate
One of the most iconic sights in Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate is definitely a must-see when you're in city. Built in the 18th century, the gate became a symbol of the divided city. However, when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, the monumental gate became a symbol of the city's peace and unification. We didn't know what was happening when we got there but there were huts, trucks and lorries parked up under the gate. Nevertheless, we still got to take some pretty pictures and got to admire Brandenburg Gate's architectural beauty.

2. Forum Willy Brandt Berlin
Located just down the road from Brandenburg Gate, Forum Willy Brandt Berlin is definitely worth a visit. I love visiting cities with a lot of history, so it was nice to visit the exhibition to learn about Willy Brandt (a German statesman and politician who was anti-Nazi) and his journey to reunify Germany.

3. Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (aka Holocaust Memorial)
The memorial features over 2700 concrete blocks to commemorate and honour the six million Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust. Walking through the memorial was an astounding yet eerie experience. Having visited the 9/11 memorial in New York back in 2015, I thought the Holocaust Memorial would have that same sort of peaceful feeling, but instead it evokes a more darker and eerier atmosphere. A site you definitely shouldn't miss when you're in Berlin though!

4. Mall of Berlin
Sometimes when you visit cities, you can get tired by walking around and visiting sites - especially when you're only there for a few days. That's why the Mall of Berlin is a great place for you to stop by to shop, eat, relax and recharge your energies. The mall is really big and beautiful. It overlooks the Bundesrat building and has a brilliant foodcourt on the top floor. As we went there just after Christmas, the Christmas decorations were still up making the place look extra pretty.

5. Checkpoint Charlie and Berlin Wall
Another iconic landmark is Checkpoint Charlie. A place you definitely have to see when you're in Berlin in my opinion. Head to the Black Box Exhibit where there's also an outdoor photo gallery, so you can learn more about the history of Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall. You can take pictures and touch a part of the Berlin Wall whilst you're there. However, if you want to see a part of the Berlin Wall that is still standing on where it was built, it's a mere 5 minute walk away from Checkpoint Charlie.

6. Berliner Fernsehturm (aka TV Tower)
Being the tallest building in Berlin, you're bound to see it when you're visiting the city. We didn't get the chance to go up it, but seeing it up close was amazing. The whole area had such a bustling energy to it, mainly due to it being a popular tourist spot. So make sure you save some time to explore the area - especially if you visit during Christmas time, as the Christmas markets is just right under the iconic building.

7. Charlottenburg Palace
The Charlottenburg Palace is the largest royal palace in Berlin. The palace is really beautiful, even the grounds were! The palace was undergoing building works when we were there, but like the Brandenburg Gate, we were still able to admire the architecture and the beauty of it.

Nailed it.

8. Gendarmenmarkt
Known as Berlin's most magnificent square, Gendarmenmarkt is definitely a place you need to visit when you're in Berlin. If you're around during Christmas, then I seriously would recommend visiting the square, as the traditional Christmas market held there is said to be one of the best Christmas markets in the world.

I hope you guys enjoyed this blog post. We did all of the above plus more in 4 days and 3 nights, so you could too! Berlin's transportation system makes it really easy to get around the city to see the sights. I highly would recommend purchasing the Berlin Welcome Card for your trip to receive free public transportation and great discounts on top sights/attractions. It definitely saved us a lot of money during our trip!

Have you been to Berlin? If so, where did you enjoy the most?

*Berlin Welcome Cards were provided by Berlin Tourism Board. As always, views and opinions are my own.
