Historical Luxury At Netherstowe House, Lichfield

Netherstowe House Hotel Luxury Review Lichfield Afternoon Tea, Dinner, Bed & Breakfast
After receiving an invite to review Netherstowe House, me and Sat made our way down to Lichfield to see what the luxury boutique hotel had to offer. Having stayed at several luxury hotels before, it was interesting to visit one that featured a more classical and historical style to what you would usually expect from a 'luxury' hotel i.e. modern looking rooms, grand interiors or spectacular views from tall buildings.

Whilst approaching the 836 year old property, there was a sense of peace and tranquility when driving down their tree-lined driveway. The Georgian house is nestled within the tallest hedges I've ever seen in my life! It wasn't until then that we knew we were in for a very peaceful and relaxed evening.

After having a little tour around the house, it was actually interesting yet refreshing to see old-fashioned decor - something that I never thought I would say because I usually prefer modern interiors. However, the floral carpets (which you might recognise from your grandmother's old house), antique furniture and furnishings made the whole place feel warm and homely.

Minster (Superior Room)

The main house consisted of nine boutique bedrooms, all that are unique in their own way. We got to experience the superior room - Minster. Despite there being a super-king sized bed, a 3-seater sofa and a bedroom bench, our room was exceptionally huge! Everything about it was classical, elegant and luxurious especially with its decor. I also loved how there were fresh caramel macarons in our room - that was a nice little touch. However with the en-suite, it seemed to have a more modern feel with its black & white grid flooring, contemporary corner shower and organic toiletries (which smelt divine by the way).

Afternoon Tea

Not long after checking in to our room, we went downstairs to one of the dining rooms to experience their ever-so-popular afternoon tea. As Sat is gluten-intolerant, we requested for the gluten-free option. With a choice of specialty teas from around the world to go alongside a selection of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and homemade sweet treats. There's literally no doubt why their afternoon teas are so popular! As it was the Halloween weekend, the staff poured hot water into a carved pumpkin (filled with dry ice) to make it smoke! It was such a cute display! It certainly put a smile on all of the diner's faces. I love how they even included the cutest mini ghost meringues in our treats! Everything about the experience was really delightful.

Dining

Around 8pm, me and Sat headed back down to the dining room for our 3-course dinner. It was amazing to see how the room transformed into a charming and romantic restaurant - every table was candlelit! Netherstowe House boasts how the dining experience is 'a touch of luxury combined with homely charm'. They certainly weren't lying about that! The whole atmosphere was very relaxed and romantic. The restaurant served a very classic British menu that even the gluten intolerant can also enjoy. The food was very tasty. We both enjoyed all our courses, especially our 8oz rib-eye steaks! Although I do feel like they could've went a little easy on the salt but nonetheless, it didn't stop me from demolishing everything.

After having a great sleep in the plushiest bed I've ever slept on (no joke, not even my bed at home is as great as this was), yes, you guessed it... we headed back down to our favourite room - the dining room for breakfast! We both went for the House Grill (full English), which was absolutely delicious and filling. There was a small buffet of continental selections, which we didn't take advantage of because the House Grill and the complimentary toasts were more than enough.

Overall, our time at Netherstowe House was a brilliant experience. In a way, it taught me that luxury hotels doesn't always mean marbled floors, grand chandeliers and pristine white rooms. It's all about the service and the feeling of being valued within a property that is exquisite in its own right. Within this hotel, there wasn't a theme as such. However, if you can mix classical, historical and luxury into one thing, then Netherstowe House would be it. I definitely would stay here again if I had the chance.

What do you expect from a 'luxury' hotel?

  1. What a beautiful room - so quintessentially English. I love it when rooms have sofas too, just adds that bit more comfort.
