What Does It Mean To Be In Love?

What Does It Mean To Be In Love? FeelingsValentines, Valentines, Valentines... the day to celebrate love and romance.

Lust, attraction and love has become harder to decode since "I Love You" became words that are often misused, overused and undervalued. Since Valentine's day is just around the corner, I'm going to talk about my perception on what it actually means to be in love.

When two become one.

I believe that when you're in love, compatibility is the glue that holds the relationship. The true meaning of love to me is when two hearts make a whole where both individual lives are linked and balanced. One where you can't imagine not watching your favourite movie/TV show together, not eating at your favourite restaurant together and not going to bed at night together at the same time etc. All of these things show how much you share the same rituals in your lives and defines the real meaning of calling each other the 'other half.'

Being each other's best friend.

Being able to just chill, watch movies, eat takeaways, play games, gossip and joke around having more playful moments than serious ones is something that strengthens the connection within the relationship. No matter how weird or silly you both may act, how much you adore each other won't change because of how much you both enjoy each other's company. Being in a relationship where you can completely be yourselves and love one another for who you are is something that differentiates a boyfriend to a partner.

When you still 'fancy' each other.

When you're in a long term relationship, things like excitement and attraction will naturally decrease from the first time you met. The feeling of having butterflies in your stomach will eventually fade but it shouldn't ever fade to nothing. You should still be experiencing odd unexpected moments where you'd just think to yourself how lucky you are to have bagged yourself a bit of eye-candy. Or moments where you could be walking down a street and see an attractive boy/girl but in your head you're thinking "mine's better." It's those instances in your relationship where they become subtle yet vital reminders of why you were attracted to them in the first place.

Able to read one another like a book.

"Why are you so snappy?! Have you eaten?" This phrase is what I often hear alongside many. Knowing how someone else is feeling without them telling you is something that shows how much you truly know about them. Likewise with being able to know exactly how they'd react in a certain situation before it actually happens. When you're in love, you'll be able to easily read each other like a book. Sometimes more than what your, or their family members can, whereby they could be coming to you for advice on how to get through to them because they know that you have fully deciphered that individual.

Being each other's first point of contact.

This may not apply to everyone but when you're truly in love, your mum or dad may not be the first point of contact anymore - they start becoming the second. Say if you have received some good news regarding yourself, you would almost instantly call up your other half first to break the news to them without giving it much thought. This might sound sad if you're thinking in the 'battle of importance' way but that's not actually the case. Sometimes you could be frantically talking without a filter on or that you just need someone to vent to. Calling up your other half first just shows how updated you are with each other's lives and how much you trust them with anything that you say.

Being each other's Superhero.

In relationships, you will experience the highs but you will also experience the fair share of lows. Whether your lows are associated with the relationship or as an individual, being in love gives you the power to become a superhero to each other. When you're down, they would come to pick you back up. When they're down, you would come to pick them back up. When you're in a relationship, you have to realise that you become a team because when you're in love, only that superhero has that power to rescue you by making things easier when life gets hard.

Pretty deep right? Love genuinely is a beautiful and powerful thing.
One should never confuse lust with love, you should be able to differentiate between the two when the meanings of love starts becoming one-sided. In order to be truly in love is when you both need to share the same deep connection. What are your perceptions on love? What does love mean to you? Let me know your thoughts.

P.s. Happy Valentines to all those celebrating!
